I was actually getting ready to restack your post with some added notes. I was interrupted —boatlife issues— and while I was doing this on my phone I accidentally pressed the discard instead of save button... All gone! If I get the time today, I can do a 2nd attempt.
Great read! So much valuable (&cheep! We need to tune into our body's resources eg breathing etc more) advice. Does any woman in this modern day have a healthy relationship with food?!?!? So many things/illnesses appear in our bodies because of mind games. As I am slowing down in life I am taking more control of it all. Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing your entire story. I could relate by having a similar history. 🙏🏻💟🌱
Thank you so much for sharing this. Without getting into super TMI territory in the comments section, I highly relate to your experience in addition to other not-so-fun GI issues. I've been fortunate enough to receive care from a neurogastroenterologist (which I had NO idea even existed beforehand) and it's been an eye-opening experience understanding how our gut processes not just what we eat, but what happens around us. Deep belly breathing has been one of the strategies that has helped me immensely, and I appreciate you sharing when are the best times to incorporate it!
Food has been demonized for too long. May we allow ourselves the to nourish our bodies and souls with more peace.
Maybe I missed it? But I don’t see any reference to the possibility of ovarian or peritoneal cancer causing chronic post-meal bloating and discomfort. It isn’t common but it happens even in young women. Since there’s no routine screening for these, a gyn evaluation should be included in addition to GI workup.
This is really interesting information that I’m going to try. I tend to think my bloating may be more from hormone fluctuations due to years of IVF, but I’m willing to try the breathing!
On a separate note, my Mom was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease when she was 10. She lived next door to her grandmother whom she was really close with and one day she had a heart attack and died. My mom saw the medics wheel her out in a body bag. Years later, she told me she was so anxious and hurt by what she saw, she thinks that what caused the Crohn’s. Doctors never could figure out where it came from and this was the early 60s, so medicine wasn’t as advanced. It was pretty bad for her and she had 5 feet of intestines removed. Even during times of stress in her life, she would feel pain in her GI system and she’d need to take a step back and relax. I guess it really all makes sense now.
Thank you for writing this! I'm going to try this as I've been struggling with that obnoxious little pooch that won't go away for MONTHS. I've been thinking for a while it has to be my nervous system 1) because nothing else has moved the needle 2) I unfortunately live in a stressful environment. When I was visiting a friend yesterday, I noticed that I was SO relaxed. I wasn't worried about my next meal or if I was going to be in anyone's way. She was such a gracious host and I received whatever she offered with gratefulness. I was with her for 4 hours and only needed to use the restroom once. When I got home I had to go 3 times within 3 hours. INSANE.
I was beginning to lose hope this year; I’ve struggled my whole life. I’ve done the Fodmap diet. I exercise regularly. I currently eat well and shop “healthy.” I tried a breathing exercise a couple months ago to help my anxiety and learned 1) I’m always tensing my gut and therefore 2) I need to breathe more often and soften these muscles. It helped with let’s say 40% of the pain, a big difference as the pain was getting too crippling to even function daily. However, I wasn’t doing it with the muscles shown on here. Haha TMI, but doing this breathing exercise the way instructed here made me have an immediate movement. I also felt a lot better across my whole body. I’ve grown up in a very hostile environment and recently recognized the physical toll. I’m currently bettering my situation, but it’s very stressful in of itself to go through these intense changes and actualizations. I hope this technique helps with multiple things, I’ll come back after a while of consistency to share my results!
This is fascinating! Thank you so much for writing it and I really appreciated that you linked the studies too! I really like clicking on the links to see the actual studies themselves
Thank you for this information. Super! For me it answers some serious questions around the mystica of bloating. 🙌🏼

Thank you so much for writing this. Gives me a lot of reassurance as somebody who has been self-conscious about my stomach since I was little.❤️

I’ve been struggling with chronic, unexplained bloating for two years now. I will definitely try diaphragmatic breathing. Thanks so much
